Abstract

Endoscopy has had a major impact in the development of modern medicine and other medical specialties. The field of endoscopic procedure has developed over the last decade. By using different data it provided a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms, described new entities and used for early detection, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic procedures. The advantages of many technical advances and modern endoscopic equipments, endoscopy has had a developed spectacularly. Consequently, endoscopy has surpassed its function as an examination tool and it became a rapid and efficient therapeutic tool of various organs including gastrointestinal tract, head and neck, respiratory tract and others. The efficacy and usefulness of endoscopy has yet been established.

Abstract

This book is mainly for researchers interested in the new developments and applications of metabolomics. It is also important for physicians using metabolomic approaches in the diagnosis of diseases or treatment, and for postgraduate students starting their research projects on metabolomics. The book is divided into two sections as indicated from its title, namely: new insights into biology and new insights into medicine. It gives examples of the different applications of metabolomics from the production of biosurfactants by marine microorganisms to the applications of data from fecal metabolomics, serum metabolomics, and metabolomics of microbiota, as well as the use of Chinese medicines for cancer treatment. Overall, this is a well-written book, containing some very interesting research avenues and cutting-edge approaches. Finally, the editing of this book was of special interest to me and I hope that readers will also find it stimulating.

Abstract

Rabies is an acute, progressive, incurable viral encephalitis and one of the oldest described infectious diseases. All mammals are susceptible to infection, but rabid dogs are responsible for the greatest global burden. Bats and carnivores are the major wildlife reservoirs. More than 60,000 persons, primarily children, succumb each year after the bite from a rabid animal. This compilation describes new information on disease surveillance, diagnosis, prevention and control within Africa, Eurasia and the New World. Public health professionals, veterinarians, physicians, laboratory workers and conservation biologists should appreciate the novel communications provided from internationally renowned authors and the diversity of topics in this special issue on rabies.

Abstract

Helminthiasis is a disease caused by parasitic helminths such as flukes, tapeworms, filarial worms, and nematodes. These parasites cause diseases that pose serious health problems, especially in developing countries of the world. Helminthiasis is a reflection of poor socio-economic conditions, which impacts on the social life of victims and economic development. Parasitic helminths live in a variety of habitats in their hosts and are far more widespread than we think. Gastrointestinal helminths are the largest group that affects their host directly through feacal-oral routes. This book not only provides insight into antihelminthic resistance in livestock but it also discusses soil transmitted helminths in pregnant women and children and filariasis as a debilitating disease. The book covers the prevention and control of helminthiasis of which adequate diagnosis is crucial. This book helps to close the information gap on helminthiasis, which has otherwise been classified as belonging to the group of neglected diseases and overlooked as a serious cause of morbidity and mortality of humans and domestic animals. The information in this book proposes that helminthiasis needs more global attention.

Abstract

This volume presents a comprehensive overview of amyloidosis, beginning with a general historical overview and proceeding to a discussion of the subtypes of amyloidosis encountered in clinical medicine. The unifying feature common to all amyloidoses, that of misfolded proteins, is explored in some detail, and the pathobiology and manifestations are delineated for major disease entities. Both inherited and acquired amyloidosis are examined, and a discussion of current treatment approaches are included for many of these subsets. It is hoped that the volume will be useful to readers who approach the topic from a wide variety of disciplines.

Abstract

This book aims to provide an excellent overview of the differential diagnosis and approach to chest pain in various clinical settings. This book is divided into two sections including the introduction and the approach to chest pain. Our introductory chapter starts with the basic principles of statistics and its application in various diagnostic modalities of heart disease. Our authors present a nice approach to patients presenting with chest pain in various scenarios. We have also included a chapter describing GERD, which could present as chest pain and another chapter describing aortic dissection, which is a life-threatening disease presenting with chest pain. We hope that this book will serve as an accessible handbook on the differential diagnosis of chest pain.

Abstract

Mental disorders can result from disruption of neuronal circuitry, damage to the neuronal and non-neuronal cells, altered circuitry in the different regions of the brain and any changes in the permeability of the blood brain barrier. Early identification of these impairments through investigative means could help to improve the outcome for many brain and behaviour disease states. The chapters in this book describe how these abnormalities can lead to neurological and mental diseases such as ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), anxiety disorders, Alzheimer's disease and personality and eating disorders. Psycho-social traumas, especially during childhood, increase the incidence of amnesia and transient global amnesia, leading to the temporary inability to create new memories.Early detection of these disorders could benefit many complex diseases such as schizophrenia and depression.

Abstract

Summarizing a decade of scientific advance and therapeutic innovation, Renal Tumor offers all physicians treating kidney cancer, as well as researchers, updated information concerning the epidemiology, biology, and treatment of renal cell carcinoma. Contributors to this book are from all over the world and are experts in their individual fields. They have provided reviews about current knowledge in the management of both localized and metastatic renal cell carcinoma, as well as the latest developments in molecular genetics, imaging, and immune dysfunction associated with the diseases. Further special attention is paid to the biology of selected target molecules and various agents that inhibit these targets, including full chapters devoted to pharmaceutical drugs that selectively inhibit receptor tyrosine kinases, such as sunitinib and axitinib. Readers such as urological physicians, researchers, and kidney cancer patients are potential beneficiaries of this book.
